Silk Web is under the material category of "fabrics" which makes up the lightest clothes aka armour. You are absolutely right that this armour won't be as good for defending against sharp and pointy objects [as compared to, say, metal based armour]. BUT, this armour is the lightest and so will give you much better evasion since it isn't as heavy/cumbersome ;]
